Let's face it, even though public school districts are required to provide what the child needs to make 'meaningful' progress, they frequently don't have the resources or personnel. So, it's time to get real.
Be prepared to have your Public school district:
deny that your child has the problem you say they have;
deny that your child needs the kind of instruction you say they need; or
they can provide an ineffective program.

All of this leaves parents feeling frustrated and betrayed. It's time to get ready to break up, because the reality is that your public school district is never going to change and put you or your child first. So:
-Make sure you have your child's IEPs and report cards
- Learn about what an evaluation is!
- Make sure you have copies of any evaluations done by the District
- Let your child take standardized tests, including the NYS ELA and Math
tests
- Get copies of your child's work
- Make EVERY request in writing, preferably by email so that there's a
name and a date on your communications
- Get assistance - in addition to my firm, there are several not-for-profits

-Stay calm - NEVER loose your cool.
-Learn more about your child's particular needs
- Investigate and visit private schools that might serve your
child so that they really can make 'meaningful progress
