When I litigate in Federal court, there are rules that specify who qualifies as an expert. Not so in life. The world has many ‘self-proclaimed’ experts. While experience is a great teacher, it might not make you an ‘expert.’ In some instances, experience is really all you need to amass critical knowledge – it all depends. Still, it is important to carefully select the team who will guide you through this special education adventure. Ask questions, like how many children has the expert worked with who have issues similar to your child’s. Also, beware of experts who offer opinions in fields where they are not expert!
